Saturday April 24th we headed out with a small group from portlandhikers.org to find the Valley of the Giants. A small Island of protected old growth temperate rain forest (averaging 180" of rain pa) in the Coast Range west of Falls City. Valley of the Giants is a destination not somewhere you stop by on the way to somewhere else. Falls City itself is out of the way but to get to the Valley requires another 30 miles of driving on gravel roads, that's a 60 mile round trip on gravel! In the Photo Chiyoko squeezes through "Big Guy" until it blew down in 1984 "Big Guy" was the second largest Doug Fir in Oregon at around 230' & about 600 years old!

So Sunday we cobbled 2 shorter hikes together to make one double peak hike. First we made our way up past Hardy & Rhodney Falls to Hamilton Mountain then on to the Saddle. From there we came down Don's cutoff trail and crossed over Hardy Creek on the new Horse Bridge. We then made our way up the "Still under construction" New Trail and on to Hardy Ridge. Once on Hardy Ridge we made our way up to Phlox Point. From here we returned by way of the East Hardy Ridge Trail to the junction with the Hardy Creek Trail and then back down to the Hamilton Mountain Trailhead. All in all about 13 miles, +/-4000' & the first 2010 hike in shorts :^)

Saturday Chiyoko & I hiked from the Herman Creek Trailhead over to the Pacific Crest Trail & then on to the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks. Despite the miserable weather of the last couple of weeks Spring is coming, as the Glacier Lilies & these Fairy Slippers will attest!
